Day 30: Fave Region - Hoenn
As if this would be any surprise? Generation 3 is my favourite as I’ve covered earlier in this challenge. Hoenn in one word is “perfect”. Now, let me get all geographical.
I love the layout of Hoenn, it is sublime. You start off in a small town as always, but unlike the other games, it takes some time to get to the first gym challenge. You set off through an array of landscapes such as regular fields, deep forests, the vast ocean, dank caves, seafaring islands, high grassed hills, a rocky volcano, a sand-whipped desert, cascading waterfalls, an ash-laden field, and so on. Hoenn also has a variety of cool establishments too, an abandoned ship, a weather institute, a space center, a town floating on logs, a town inside of a caldera, a town nestled in the trees with rope bridges, a mirage island, et cetera.
What I like about the layout also, is that the region’s game progression consistently throws different environments at you, so I never found the region monotonous or boring like with all the mountain/cave trekking there was in generation 4, or the field trekking of generation 1. For an example, by time you get to the 4th gym in Hoenn, you’ve trekked plains, forests, caves, islands, the ocean, a volcano, ashy moors, and a waterfall. Compared to generation 1 you’d have only seen plains, forests, caves and more caves and more caves. I just love the geographic variations. The only thing I wish Hoenn had was a snowy place, but as the region is based off of Kyushu in Japan, which is a warm region, there’d really be no snowy place anyway. And lastly, Hoenn offered up such distinct and new pokemon, it is a wonderful region altogether because of its pokemon, geography, and atmosphere.
